Nurse’s Notes for October

Nurse’s Notes
October is National Child Health Month

The CDC, Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, recommended a month be dedicated to help teach parents about the prevention of childhood illnesses and diseases, and injuries.

October is also Bullying Awareness month. Bullying today is far more widespread than it was when I was growing up. Cyber bullying has taken bullying to a whole new dangerous level. I attended a seminar by Glen Klinkhart in Anchorage. He is a retired Anchorage Police Officer who was the original internet crimes officer. He has some words of advice about posting information on the internet. His 3 rules of posting are:
-Keep it Light
-Keep it Bright
-Keep it Polite
Can you imagine the change that could make if everyone thought about this before they posted?

Flu season is coming to an area near you! Washing our hands, getting adequate sleep, keeping our hands away from our faces, and coughing/sneezing into our sleeves are simple ways to help prevent the spread of illness. Getting a yearly flu shot is another. We are fortunate in Homer to have many options available for flu shots.
